Three ways to reshape a cornea
All laser vision correction changes the curve of the cornea. The methods differ in how the surgeon reaches the tissue:
- PRK removes the thin surface layer and applies the excimer laser directly. No flap, slower and more uncomfortable first week, and often preferred for thinner corneas or contact sports.
- LASIK creates a hinged flap, applies the excimer laser underneath, then lays the flap back. The flap can be cut by a blade device (microkeratome) or by a femtosecond laser, which is what "bladeless" or "femto-LASIK" means.
- Lenticule surgery (SMILE and similar systems) uses only a femtosecond laser to shape a small disc of tissue inside the cornea, removed through a small incision. No flap.
When none of those fit, usually because the prescription is very high or the cornea is too thin, surgeons turn to implanted lenses, covered in our guide to ICL surgery in Medellin.
What Medellin clinics publicly advertise
We only list what clinics state on their own sites, not endorsements. Machine claims change as clinics upgrade, so treat this as a starting point to verify.
| Technology | Published in Medellin? | Example of a public claim | What to verify |
|---|---|---|---|
| PRK | Yes, widely | MasVision Medellin describes both PRK and LASIK and says the technique is chosen after evaluation | Pain control plan and the bandage lens follow-up schedule |
| Femtosecond LASIK | Yes | Clinica Sandiego says it uses the SCHWIND AMARIS 1050RS excimer and the Ziemer FEMTO Z8, describing the pair as unique in Medellin (Aug 2025) | Whether the femto laser cuts your flap or is used for other steps |
| Microkeratome LASIK | Yes, often at lower price points | Chain and lower-cost offers often do not name the flap method | Ask directly: blade or femtosecond flap? |
| Lenticule (SMILE-type) | Yes, at fewer centers | At least one Medellin ophthalmologist lists CLEAR lenticule surgery alongside LASIK, PRK, and phakic lenses | Platform name and the surgeon's lenticule case volume |
| Phakic lens (ICL) | Yes | Listed by several Medellin refractive practices | See our ICL guide |

Published price bands by technology
2026 Colombian price bands, both eyes (USD at TRM 3,100.45)
A single national chain price, such as Lafam's published COP 2,350,000 for both eyes, is not directly comparable to these bands until you know which flap method and laser it covers. Always compare like with like.
Does femtosecond actually matter?
Femtosecond flaps are more predictable in thickness and shape than blade flaps, which is why most US practices moved to them. Blade LASIK in experienced hands still produces excellent outcomes, and some surgeons choose it for specific eyes. The practical point for you: the flap method is a real line item, and a quote that does not name it cannot be compared with one that does. Lenticule surgery avoids a flap entirely, which some patients in contact sports or with dry-eye concerns prefer, but it is not available for every prescription.
How the technology choice is made
You do not pick the technique from a menu. Pre-op testing (corneal tomography, thickness mapping, tear film, pupil size, and a refraction) decides which options are safe. A good clinic will sometimes steer you away from the priciest option. Ask to see your tomography map and to have the reasoning explained. If one clinic says LASIK and another says PRK, that is information about each clinic's safety margins, and worth a conversation with both.

Frequently asked questions
Is bladeless LASIK available in Medellin?
Yes. Several Medellin clinics advertise femtosecond flap creation. At least one names its platforms publicly. Ask any clinic to confirm the femtosecond laser in writing.
Is SMILE surgery available in Medellin?
Lenticule surgery is offered at fewer centers than LASIK. At least one Medellin practice lists CLEAR lenticule surgery. Confirm the platform and the surgeon's volume.
Why is PRK cheaper than femto-LASIK?
PRK uses the excimer laser without a flap, so no femtosecond step or microkeratome is needed. Recovery takes longer, which matters for a short trip.
Can I choose my procedure before testing?
You can state a preference, but tomography and corneal thickness decide what is safe. Treat any clinic that confirms a technique before testing with caution.
